A terrible pestilence, the Red Death, is devastating the land, and Prince Prospero realises his dominions are becoming deserted. He decides to withdraw with a thousand friends and courtiers into his palace, to avoid catching the plague. Inside, the occupants spend their days in joy, with dances and jesters, and after five months of seclusion the prince decides to hold a masked ball. What happens at the feast?

Through the seven rooms of the suite, dreams whirl without pause, taking their colour from each chamber — until the ebony clock in the velvet room strikes the hour, and for an instant everything freezes into stillness and silence, save the voice of the clock. Then the echoes die away, and a light, half-subdued laughter floats after the dreams as they resume their whirling.
